Residential Roofing Systems

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home. It protects your home from wind, rain and storms. It also supports appropriate ventilation to release heat and promote healthy airflow. While most folks think about the roofing material as the main element, a roof is actually several different components that work together.

Decking: Typically made from plywood sheathing or 1×6’s, especially in older homes, the decking attaches to the rafters or trusses. Roof decks can typically be reroofed two to three times before they require replacement.

Underlayment: Made from asphalt-coated paper, felt or synthetic materials like polyethylene or bonded polyester, the underlayment provides a moisture-resistant barrier that protects your shingles as well as the roof desking.

Roof Covering: Often considered the main part of your roof, the roof covering is visible outside your home. While architectural asphalt shingles are a common choice, we also install synthetic slate, cedar shakes, standing-seam metal and other materials.

Vents: Roof and soffit vents promote health airflow and help to reduce excessive heat gain in your attic. Our roofing contractors install ridge vents, soffit vents and powered or passive box vents.

Flashing: Often considered a lost art, properly installed flashing provides an extra layer of protection in areas that are vulnerable to moisture incursion, such as around chimneys, skylights, valleys and locations where the roof meets vertical sidewalls.

Drip Edge: Another often overlooked part of a high-quality roofing system is the drip edge. These specially shaped flashing strips are installed under the shingles along the edge of the roof. They protect the fascia boards from moisture and direct water into your gutters.

6 Signs It’s Time for a Roof Replacement

The average residential roof has a lifespan of 20-50 years. Asphalt shingles typically last for 15-30 years depending on the initial quality. While metal roofs, cedar shakes and slate can last for 50 years or more, maintenance, installation quality, climate, and sun exposure can affect how long your roof lasts. If your roof has experienced storm damage, is loosing granules or has developed unsightly streaks, it might be time for a roof replacement.

1. Curling and cupping, which often appear as abnormal variations in the smooth surface of your roof, are a strong sign that your roof is ready for replacement. This can occur due to normal deterioration with age as well as problems with the underlying surface, especially if shingles were installed on top of an existing roof.
2. As with curling and cupping, loose or missing shingles can allow water to enter your home and damage the roof decking. We use drones and cameras to visually inspect your roof for signs of damage and age-related wear and tear.
3. Granule loss is another telltale sign that your roof is nearing the end of its lifespan. These colored rock chips and minerals protect your roof from UV damage and offer fire resistance. If you’re seeing granules in your gutters and downspouts, contact us for a free inspection.
4. Staining and unsightly color variations can be caused by lost granules or weather-related fading. Algae, mildew and similar microbes may be trying to feed on the shingles. Our roofing contractors can determine the cause and the best solution.
5. Storm damage is extremely common in Tennessee. Nationally, wind and hail damage result in over $29 billion in insurance claims, affecting one in every 35 homeowners. Our team can detect storm damage that lifts, cracks or dents the roof surface, and we’ll work with your insurance company to repair the damage.
6. Leaks are a sure sign that your roof is ready for replacement. Water damage in your attic or main living areas typically occurs when moisture enters due to missing or damaged shingles. Aging flashing is another common cause of water intrusion.
